First Mat
Forty-five minutes for people who have never done any of this and are slightly embarrassed to be here. Eight pounds, once a week.
First Mat exists because June refused to let anybody pay sixteen pounds to find out whether they hate this. It costs eight, it happens every Sunday at eleven, and it is the only class where the teacher explains why before asking you to do anything.
What June covers
- Where the breath actually goes. With a hand on your belly and a hand on your chest, and no judgement about which one moves.
- Breathing through the nose. Why it is worth the mild annoyance, and what to do if your nose is simply blocked.
- The exhale. A very short introduction to making it longer, which is the one thing every other class on the timetable builds on.
- Lying still. Five minutes of it, with June talking the whole way through, because silence is a lot to ask the first time.
After First Mat
June will suggest one class, based on how you found it — usually Downshift if you liked lying still, Long Exhale if you work nearby and have a lunch hour, Floor Work if your body did most of the talking. You can take First Mat as many times as you like. A few people have come every Sunday for two years. June says that is the correct amount.
